Inventor to livestream icewater swim during wearable tech conference in Toronto
TORONTO, ON / ACCESSWIRE / December 7, 2021 / University of Toronto Professor Steve Mann, widely recognized as "the father of wearable computing" is hosting the 23rd annual Water-Human-Computer Interface (WaterHCI.com) conference online and at Ontario Place beach, downtown Toronto's only beach.
Once the morning lectures are completed, "we will be at the Ontario Place beach at 1 pm EST for an icewater swim," says Professor Steve Mann. Craig Travers from Vuzix and Cayden Pierce from Emex Labs will be deploying wearable extended reality (XR) swim glasses to anyone who'd like to try them.
Dr. S. Park from Stanford University will present a talk on the world's most advanced smart toilet. Mark Mattson, founder of Swim Drink Fish, will present his groundbreaking work on water conservation with the Swimguide app.
The theme of the conference, Water-Human-Computer-Interaction (WaterHCI), originated in Ontario in the 1960s as an exploration of the interplay between water, humans, and technology. WaterHCI is a new field with the goal of researching and creating technologies at the interface of humans and water. The field encompasses AR swimming goggles, smart showers that scan users' health, smart toilets which predict disease, underwater musical instruments, and more developments which reframe the way we understand our relationship with water.
Mann founded the first conference on water, humans, and computing in 1998, in collaboration with the then McLuhan Program in Culture and Technology (now the McLuhan Centre) at University of Toronto.
