Wednesday, 16 March 2022 03:00 AM

The retired priest, military chaplain, and academic debuts a new online platform from which he will communicate his ideas and experiences to the world.

RICHMOND, VA / ACCESSWIRE / March 16, 2022 / It is with great pleasure that Rev. Edward Moran, retired priest, military chaplain, and academic announces he has launched a new blog, bolstered by two inaugural entries. The web-based journal is hosted by a well-known online platform and deals with matters relating to assisting veterans with mental health issues, which is one of his areas of professional expertise, and aviation, which is one of his lifelong passions.

In the latest entry, titled Rev. Edward Moran Gives You an Aviation Enthusiasts Guide to Pilot Licensing, Rev. Moran walks the reader step-by-step through the process of becoming a legitimate pilot. In one passage, he addresses the amount of time it generally takes to complete the process of obtaining a pilot's license. "In the United States and Canada, it typically takes anywhere from three to six months to complete the licensing process depending on the weather. Now you know why many flight schools are located in Florida, Arizona, and Texas where the weather is generally very good," he writes, going on to add a proviso to that statement, "However, some countries require more training hours than others, so it's important to check the specific requirements in your area. This can vary depending on your level of experience and the number of exams you need to pass."

In the preceding entry, titled Rev. Edward Moran Explains How Clinical Psychology Can Help Veterans Transition to Life at Home, Rev. Edward Moran discusses the serious subject of soldiers suffering from mental health issues after leaving the military. Near the beginning of the blog post, he explains why so many combat veterans find themselves in need of clinical psychology as they adapt to the new realities of civilian life. "One of the biggest problems for troops stationed in combat areas is experiencing various kinds of trauma experienced while on active duty. Trauma can result from anything that produces violent, disorienting physical or emotional suffering. These events can be from a wide range of experiences: from combat to air crash surveys involving found body parts. A soldier internalizes these events many times without dealing with their after-effects. This internalization can lead to a host of social/emotional problems that affect everything from close relationships to work performance," he explains, before noting that soldiers such as these "typically need a kind of psychotherapy called trauma treatment that can identify and mitigate these kinds of problems."

About Rev. Edward Moran:

Rev. Edward Moran is a retired priest, military chaplain, and academic, originally born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. As the child of a military family, Edward moved frequently in his youth. Eventually, when his father came to be stationed in Petersburg, Virginia as a retired civilian military worker, Edward was enrolled in the local Catholic elementary school, and later, high school, all the while the family attended services at the local parish of St. Joseph's.

As he grew older, Edward Moran harbored dreams of becoming a pilot, applying unsuccessfully to the Air Force Academy to be trained as a jet fighter pilot. In 1969, he was made a First Alternate which meant if someone dropped out, he would have an opening to attend. Unfortunately, the applicant in line before him never dropped out, so Edward ended up taking an ROTC scholarship to the University of Virginia. There, he got to know the pastor of the University parish who proved to be a lifelong friend, and helped to guide him into the priesthood after he served in the US Army as an aviator from 1974-1977 at Fort Hood, Texas. Edward was ordained in 1989 and assigned to local parishes in the Diocese of Richmond, ultimately becoming a pastor in 1990. After some years had passed, he obtained permission from his bishop to re-enter the military, this time as a chaplain with the Air Force. He served in this role from 1995-2009, even seeing ministry in Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar as well as front line action in Afghanistan at Bagram Airbase.

These days, Rev. Moran is retired, but he still finds great fulfillment serving people in his community. Hardly idle, he earned a Master's degree in Psychology in 2015 from the Institute for the Psychological Sciences, and now spends a good deal of his time working with church members and combat veterans providing service with support, guidance, and recovery. He is also an active certified Flight Instructor and proficient in single engine, multi-engine, gliders, rotary, seaplanes as well as a certified drone operator. He is instrument rated and teaches ground schools helping students to grasp the new digital technology present in the aviation environment today. He authors a monthly article on aviation for a national organization of pilots.
