LIRA, UGANDA / ACCESSWIRE / November 25, 2024 / Love Without Boundaries (LWB) is thrilled to announce the successful completion of its fifth Pediatric Hernia Medical Mission in Uganda, which brought healing and relief to 524 children suffering from painful hernias. This extraordinary effort, held at the Lira Regional Referral Hospital in northern Uganda, was made possible by the generosity and support of LWB's global community of donors.
Over the course of two weeks in November, a dedicated team of physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists, and support staff worked tirelessly to perform life-changing surgeries for children in need. The medical team reached an incredible milestone of 74 surgeries in a single day, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to ensuring no child was turned away.
The mission's success was built on a comprehensive outreach campaign led by LWB's Uganda team, which included local radio shows, flyers, Community Audio Tower speakers, and truck-mounted broadcasts to reach remote villages. Even the mission's lead surgeon, Dr. Charles Odongo, played a pivotal role by appearing on radio programs to educate families about the safety and necessity of hernia surgery.
For many families, the surgeries offered relief from years of pain and provided hope for a brighter future. Stories like those of Emmanuel, Gerald, and Emma underscore the transformative impact of this mission. Emmanuel, who lost his parents in a violent rebel attack, now smiles freely after receiving surgery. Gerald, a resilient 13-year-old raised by his aunt, found healing thanks to the mission. And Emma, who suffered from hernia pain for 14 years, can now return to school and daily life without discomfort.
Northern Uganda's staggering need for surgical care remains a critical challenge, with only one doctor available for every 130,000 people in rural areas like Lira. LWB's medical missions aim to bridge this gap, providing essential care to vulnerable children and their families. In 2024 alone, LWB facilitated 928 surgeries, with each procedure offering new opportunities for health and happiness.
